A cyclist died, and another was left badly hurt, after a car swerved into a bike lane on a major Sydney road, Manly Local Court has heard.
Nick Sky, a married father of two, died in hospital two days after he was struck from behind by a Subaru Liberty station wagon just after 6am on June 4.
Mr Sky, from Sydney’s North Shore, was on a training ride with his friend Michael Collings, 56, when the car hit the pair as they cycled north on Forest Way at Belrose.
Despite emergency surgery to critical head injuries, Mr Sky died in Royal North Shore Hospital.
Police allege that Kyle Hakki, 22, of Allambie Heights, was driving the Subaru when the collision occurred.
Mr Hakki has been charged with one count each of negligent driving causing death, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and cause bodily harm by misconduct.
In documents tendered to court, police alleged that Mr Hakki, when he was behind the wheel of the station wagon, “did, by certain misconduct” cause the vehicle to “swerve into a bicycle lane” on Forest Way.
The force of the collision smashed the windshield of the car.
The cyclists, both well known figures in competitive cycling circles on the North Shore, had been on a training ride to prepare for an upcoming Masters event overseas.
Forest Way was closed in both directions for several hours on June 4, at the intersection with Wyatt Ave, as emergency services worked to clear the area and police began their investigations.
Mr Hakki did not enter any pleas.
The matters were adjourned for plea or mention to Manly Local Court on August 28.
