More than 110,000 images of child abuse were allegedly found in the flat of an elderly man with an “infatuation” for girls under 12 years old, a Sydney court has heard.

Police allegedly found the images stored on commuter hard drives, a USB and in “the cloud” at the home of pensioner John Hamilton Doyle, 80, of Milsons Point.

More than 850 videos depicting child abuse materials were also allegedly discovered in the accused’s home unit in the Greenway apartment complex near the northern end of the Harbour Bridge.

Bail documents tendered to court alleged that Mr Doyle “has spoken to police of his infatuation with young girls, specifically under the age of 12”.

“Doyle also detailed that he spends most mornings, between 8am and 11am, at his local coffee shop during which he would ‘people watch’,” the bail documents stated.

“The accused was able to tell police the number of schools within the area he would frequent and the various routes children would take.”

The court heard that Mr Doyle’s alleged child abuse image collection was only discovered after police were alerted by a computer storage company.

When police raided Mr Doyle’s flat they allegedly discovered 815 printed colour images containing child abuse material.

They later allegedly found 531 images stored on a ‘Scan Disk’ 32 GB (gigabyte) USB, documents tendered to court said.

Police also allegedly found a 160 GB Hard Drive containing 109,950 images depicting child abuse as well as 858 videos.

The bail document said: “It should be noted that Mr Doyle was only discovered because his child abuse material collection is so large that it filled the external hard drive he specifically uses.

“Due to this, his Adobe Cloud service was storing them as a backup to clear room on his drives.

“Had this not been discovered by Adobe Services, Mr Doyle would have continued this behaviour undetected.”

Mr Doyle is yet to enter a plea on four counts of possess child abuse material.

He is on strict conditional bail which includes orders not to approach any person aged under 18; not to enter, or loiter near, any school or child care centre and; to not leave home unless he has to shop for food — between 10am and 2pm.

Mr Doyle will be back in court on March 24 for plea or mention.
