YOU could be forgiven for thinking Johanna Griggs just turns up and reads an autocue for her job fronting the Rio Olympics coverage for Channel 7 from tomorrow.
But the former champion swimmer has been preparing for months.
Griggs, of Collaroy, has folders of notes she has researched on all the athletes for her role, which will include reporting and covering the opening and closing ceremonies.
“It’s not fair to the athletes to not give them the justice they deserve,” she said. “You have to be prepared for everything.”
And there’ll be no down time either, according to Griggs, despite the glamorous gig, which has already seen her tweet photos from Copacabana Beach.
“You just get flogged from start to finish,” she said.
“There won’t be any cocktails on the beach.”
Griggs, who won Commonwealth bronze but never swam at the Olympics, reckons Australia will walk away with up to 16 gold medals this year — although she said she hated medal tallies, saying, “It’s so amazing to be an Olympian”.
“I think this time we are in a much better position than we were four years ago,” she said.
“We’ve probably got the strongest athletics team. There's so many athletes that have constant podium finishes.”
However, husband Todd might not be watching tomorrow’s coverage. He is taking advantage of Griggs being away, with a boy’s weekend. “I said, ‘That’s the opening ceremony — I guess you won’t be watching,” she said, with a laugh.
Griggs isn’t the only northern beaches TV host to be working in Rio.
David “Kochie” Koch, of Sunrise, is also there — and shared snaps from the Christ The Redeemer statue.
Coverage starts on Channel 7 on Saturday at 6am.
