A disqualified driver allegedly involved in a dangerous police pursuit in an unregistered car was refused bail in Manly Local Court on Thursday.
Jason Pfeiler, 39, of Milsons Point, was also accused of being involved in a physical “altercation” with two officers when he abandoned the car after the chase through Manly Vale on Wednesday night.
Mr Pfeiler, who was arrested soon after allegedly dumping the white Holden Commodore station wagon in Quirk Rd pleaded not guilty to eight charges linked to the pursuit.
Police allege that about 7.50pm on Wednesday officers tried to stop the Commodore on Kentwell Rd, Manly Vale, after seeing the driver not wearing a seatbelt.
But police allege the car failed to stop and accelerated away before coming to a halt in Quirk Rd, a dead-end street. The car had two blown tyres including one that was shredded.
Police allege Mr Pfeiler than ran into nearby Manly West Park where he was arrested after a short foot pursuit.
Police prosecutor Amy Jenner told the court that Mr Pfeiler was then allegedly involved in a physical altercation with police.
During a search of the Commodore police allegedly found a bag of tools including pliers, a claw hammer and cutting shears.
Mr Pfeiler was taken to Manly Police Station where he given a breath analysis, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.035.
A charge sheet tendered to court alleged Mr Pfeiler “drove the vehicle recklessly and at a speed and manner dangerous to others” between 7.52pm and 7.54pm.
He was charged with police pursuit — not stop — drive dangerously; drive while disqualified, use unregistered vehicle, negligent driving, special range PCA, refuse breath test, resist police, and possess housebreaking implements.
Mr Pfeiler pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Through his legal aid solicitor, Mr Pfeiler said he was a passenger in the car and that another person was driving. The solicitor said Mr Pfeiler had met the driver in Manly Vale and asked for a lift.
In opposing bail Sgt Jenner told the court that there were concerns that Mr Pfeiler may commit more offences if released from custody.
“The defendant not only put himself at risk, but also other road users,” she said.
Magistrate Michelle Goodwin said Mr Pfeiler was already disqualified from driving until 2021 and had an extensive criminal and traffic record.
“He presents a danger to the community,” Ms Goodwin said.
She refused bail and ordered Mr Pfeiler to appear in Manly Local Court on July 25 for mention.
