A man who allegedly stabbed a stranger in a daylight knife attack on the northern beaches is being treated in a prison hospital, a court heard on Tuesday.

Jacob Morgan, 29, is charged with randomly attacking a man with the knife outside the Manly Lawn Tennis Club on June 11.

Mr Morgan, from Carlingford, is also accused of holding up a Chatswood clothing store with a knife on the same day.

The accused, who is in custody on remand, was scheduled to appear for mention in Manly Local Court via a video link on Tuesday morning.

But his Legal Aid solicitor told Magistrate Bruce Williams that Mr Morgan would not be appearing on screen.

The solicitor said Mr Morgan was still being treated for some medical issues at the prison hospital within the Long Bay Correctional Complex at Malabar.

Mr Williams adjourned the matter to Manly Local Court on July 8 and ordered that a brief of evidence be prepared by August 19.

Police will allege in court that at about 3.40pm on a Friday afternoon, Mr Morgan stabbed Hugo Fraser Stegmann, 43, in the arm on Raglan St, near the intersection with Pittwater Rd.

Mr Stegmann, who does not know the accused, had to have surgery on the wound at Northern Beaches Hospital. He has since been discharged.

Police will also allege in court that at about 1pm the same day, Mr Morgan took items of clothing — a cap and a jacket — from the Glue clothing store at Chatswood.

It will be alleged that when approached by a male staff member, Mr Morgan threatened him with a “small, silver coloured knife” before running off.

Mr Morgan has yet to enter a plea on one count each of wounding a person with intent to cause previous grievous bodily harm and robbery armed with offensive weapon.

Man ‘very lucky’ after alleged knife attack left groove in bone

On June 17, 2021

A father who was allegedly stabbed in the street in Manly in a “random event”, told how the knife hit a bone in his arm so hard it left a groove.

Hugo Stegmann, 43, said he had just finished an afternoon tennis match with friends at Manly Lawn Tennis Club and was waiting for an Uber in Raglan St when a stranger allegedly stabbed him in the arm at around 3.40pm on Friday.

Mr Stegmann, who is self-employed in finance, said the incident had been shocking and very surreal.

He said there was a confrontation and he initially thought he had been punched very hard in the upper arm.

It was only a few minutes later that he noticed blood dripping down his arm and hand and saw his clothes had been cut.

He called Triple-0 and was told to sit down and wait for police.

After they arrived, they cut off his clothes at the scene, and bagged them for evidence.

“Full credit to the police and the emergency services,” Mr Stegmann said.

“They were very efficient.”

The North Balgowlah man, who is now recovering at home after surgery at Northern Beaches Hospital, was told by doctors he was “very, very lucky” not to have suffered more serious injuries.

“The cut was about 5cms across and it went all the way to the bone, leaving a groove there,” Mr Stegmann said.

“The orthopaedic surgeon said that I was very, very lucky to get away with just muscle damage.

“A couple of centimetres either way and I would have severed nerves.

“It was on my left arm and I am a left-handed tennis player too.”

Mr Stegmann underwent surgery to repair the tissue on Saturday.

He has been told it will take about six weeks to heal.

The father-of-two who grew up in South Africa and lived in London said it was hard to believe that such an incident could happen in Manly.

“I dodged trouble in Johannesburg and I lived in London for eight years, but this happened in Manly,” he said.

He said it was a “very weird experience” and “surreal”.

He said the first night in hospital was a bit traumatic as he kept running through the scenario leading up to the event in his head over and over.

However, he said he was grateful for the support he had received from family and friends and felt it was a “random event” and not likely to happen again.
