Witnesses have described seeing flames “five or six metres high” as a ferocious fire tore through a northern beaches marina – destroying three boats and damaging two others.
Emergency services raced to Holmeport Marinas at Church Point after a fire broke out on a boat about 5am.
Water Police worked to move the vessel towards the shore where Fire and Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service began working to extinguish the blaze.
Despite the efforts of firefighters, the flames from the fire spread to two other nearby vessels.
NSW Police said further attempts were made to extinguish the fires as the vessels were moved away from the marina.
The three motor cruisers were completely destroyed in the blaze and have been moved against a sea wall at the marina where pollution booms have been set up to prevent further contamination.
Initial investigations indicate no one was on board the vessels at the time of the fire.
NSW Police said a further two vessels received minor damage due to heat exposure.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
The fire broke out in front of shocked witnesses who described seeing flames “five or six metres” high.
NSW Police have confirmed a crime scene has been established at the site.
