PLANNED hazard reduction burns are being carried out incredibly close to homes on Sydney’s northern beaches.
The Fire & Rescue NSW operation, which according to Northern Beaches Council began at 10.30am this morning, are being conducted at North Curl Curl.
Despite the fires being in proximity to homes, a spokesman for Fire & Rescue NSW told the Manly Daily shortly after 12.30pm that the fire was under control.

“It’s all going according to plan,” he said.
“We do have Fire & Rescue NSW crews managing it — it’s all under control.
“The area of the burn is within the vicitnity of properties, but it’s designed to protect those properties.”
Bystanders have also said homes are not jeopardy.
The hazard reduction burn is scheduled to finish at 5pm.
“Crews will continue to patrol the area into the evening,” he said.
A Soniver Road resident said today was the first time in over 40 years he had ever seen a burn off in the area take place.
“The smoke has been belting up — it comes in spasms and gets black when it gets onto something good,” he said.
The resident commended the fire crews for carrying out the burning.
“If they didn’t do the burn off, nature would most likely do it for them and we don’t want that happening.
“The fire is really close to homes, but there are firefighters there taking care of it.”
Curious locals have gathered in the surf club carpark to watch the flames.
“I do hope they have it under control, you can see the smoke as far away as Chatswood,” one woman said.
Earlier reports from Channel 7 suggested on Twitter that homes were under threat.
The resident told the Manly Daily he and fellow neighbours were informed about the controlled burning through a leaflet that had been sent out to those who would be affected.
He said there was quite a bit of smoke and that it was the first time in more than 40 years he had ever seen a burn off in the area take place.
“I’ve got all the windows locked and can still smell it inside, and there are a lot of cinders floating about,” he said.
“It’s all across the yard and out the front.
“They started burning off at the end of Mowlong St this morning and they didn’t go north.”
The resident commended the fire crews for carrying out the burning.
