Jun Namgung: Artarmon man charged over importation of ‘ice’ through airmail in Frenchs Forest

A parcel delivery driver on the northern beaches has fronted court over an attempt to allegedly import more than 3kg of the drug ‘ice’ into Australia from Mexico and The Netherlands through the post.

A parcel delivery man who was charged over the importation of the illegal drug ‘ice’ into Australia through the mail system appeared in Manly Local Court on Thursday.

Jun Namgung, 32, a mail delivery contractor on Sydney’s northern beaches, was arrested on Wednesday after police intercepted three separate packages of methylamphetamine air mailed from Mexico and The Netherlands.

Mr Namgung, from Artarmon, has been charged by Northern Beaches detectives with three counts of possess commercial quantity of unlawful import: border controlled drug.

Police will allege in court that Mr Namgung was using his contracted delivery driver job in an attempt to safely receive known packages across his designated delivery areas.

Australia Border Force officers allegedly found two packages of drugs at Australia Post facilities parcel sorting facilities. The packages, which were declared to contain handbags, were X-rayed.

In a media statment, outside court, police allege the bags were found to have false bottoms that concealed a crystalline-like substance. Tests returned a presumptive positive result for methylamphetamine, or ice.

Police allegedly seized a total of about 2.3kg of ice from the packages. Detectives from the Northern Beaches Police established Strike Force Pulleine to investigate the import.

During the investigation, a third package, from The Netherlands and addressed a home on the northern beaches, was intercepted by Border Force officers at Australia Post’s Sydney Gateway Facility at Clyde, near Parramatta.

It allegedly contained 1kg of ice, packed in the soles of dozens of pairs of thongs.

Mr Namgung was arrested by investigators on Clifford St, Fairlight, about 11am on Wednesday.

Then, just before 5pm, police stopped a Honda Odyssey on Endeavour St, Chatswood, and seized electronic scales, a computer and postal contractor identification.

During a search of Mr Namgung’s home, police seized an electronic control device, laptops, a hard drive and electronic storage devices, Bitcoin documentation, drug paraphernalia consistent with supply, and a digital money counter.

Mr Namgung, who declined to appear in court, did not appeal for bail and it was formally refused by Magistrate Michelle Goodwin.

Ms Goodwin ordered that a brief of evidence be served on Mr Namgung and adjourned the matter for mention to Manly Local Court on January 14 next year.
