A teenage burglar who knocked off cash, grog and mobile phones during a late-night crime spree on Sydney’s north shore has been jailed for 18 months.
But Jordan Parian, 19, of Carlingford, will get to serve the sentence for his break-ins in the home he shares with his mum and dad.
Parian, and a mate aged under 18, broke into — or attempted to burgle — six businesses in the popular Fox Valley Shopping Centre at Wahroonga between April 2 and 13 this year.
The trainee auto parts sales worker also burgled a cafe at Thornleigh and a bottle shop at Turramurra with his alleged accomplice later in the month.
They used a power drill, hammer and “jimmy bar” in their efforts to get into the small businesses.
Parian was sentenced in Manly Local Court on Thursday where he had pleaded guilty to five counts of aggravated break and enter in company to steal and three counts of aggravated break and enter in company with intent to steal.
A police facts sheet tendered to court named the businesses that were victims of Parian’s offending.
At the Karoo and Co Cafe in Wahroonga, he and his accomplice removed rear window bars before stealing $400 cash and multiple bottles of alcohol.
The Friendly Grocer supermarket was also hit, losing $200 from a till.
At nearby Holland Publishing, Parian smashed a window to get in and took cash, three mobile phones and a bottle of whisky.
The pair also attempted to break into the Fox Cafe, Wards Pharmacy and a fashion boutique at the Fox Valley Shopping Centre, without success.
On April 14 in Thornleigh, at the Monday Morning Cafe, Parian stole the staff tips jar as well as cash, totalling $1000.
Then, on April 23 at the BWS bottle shop at Turramurra, Parian and his mate filled a shopping trolley full of alcohol, cigarettes and parts of the cash tills.
On Thursday, magistrate Robert Williams told the court that he had previously sentenced Parian to 18 months in jail. but had referred the sentence to parole authorities to assess the accused’s suitability for home detention.
Mr Williams, while noting the seriousness of the offences and the number of victims, said a home detention order was appropriate given Parian’s young age and the fact he had not spent time in adult custody.
