Don't miss out on the headlines from Manly. Followed categories will be added to My News.
IT’S a fast and furious indoor sport described as ice hockey without the ice.
And four talented floorball players from the northern beaches are preparing to head overseas as part of Australa’s first under 19’s team.
They’ll compete in Switzerland in the World Floorball Competition from May 2, following a traing camp in Finland.
Gabi Palme, 16, from Freshwater has been playing the sport, which has five players and a goal keeper per team, since she was 10 and said it’s a dream to represent her country.
She’ll be joined on the team by Cara Horn, 14, and Megan Lugtenburg, 19, both from Killarney Heights, and Karolina Kambersky, 18 from Manly.
Gabi’s mother, Joanne Palme, runs Northern Beaches Floorball Club and said it’s still a very new sport.
“Floorball is a fast paced game like ice hockey, without the ice and fights,” she said
“However it is still an emerging sport in Australia and lacks financial backing.
“Gabi and Cara were selected in the top six national players last month.

“Megan and Karolina were called into the squad later.
“In 2013 Gabi won best junior female player in the Northern Beaches Open Competition against interstate players.
“She has worked really hard.”
Gabi said she’s a fan of the speed and the social aspect of the sport.
“I love playing floorball because it is fast, skillful and I have met great friends,” she said. “Everyone in the floorball community has been so helpful and supportive.” she said.
The players are raising $5000 each to go to the event.
Meanwhile, Gabi, Cara and Karolina are the first nominees for the team category of the Local Sports Star Awards.
NewsLocal is looking to celebrate the talents of outstanding young athletes and sporting teams, as well as the parents, coaches and supporters who make it all possible.
Past winners of our program — previously known as Junior Sports Star — have included Olympians Jessica Fox, Jessica Thornton and Jarryd Hughes, who just recently became one of 13 Australians to win a medal at the Winter Olympics.
Prizes will be awarded to talented athletes aged 18 and under in four categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual and Young Sporting Spirit Team.
We also have an open-age Service To Sport category, which recognises people who are the heart and soul of their sports clubs and codes.
The 2018 awards will run for 26 weeks until August 31.
Nominees will be featured in the Manly Daily and at localsportsstars.com.au
Finalists will be selected for each newspaper, with overall NSW winners announced in each of the categories at a Local Sports Stars awards presentation gala later this year.
The awards will then go national with winners from competitions run by our fellow News Corp publications in Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland.
NewsLocal would like to thank our partners Your Local Club – the NSW registered club industry, and Featherdale Wildlife Park for their ongoing support in 2018.
ClubsNSW chief executive Anthony Ball said: “Registered clubs are passionate supporters of junior sport.
“The NSW club industry pours more than $67 million into grassroots sport every year, which funds everything from player registrations to team uniforms and the maintenance of sporting infrastructure, such as playing fields, swimming pools, gymnasiums and tennis courts.
“ClubsNSW and Your Local Club is proud to support this program, which shines a light on elite young athletes, as well as those who have overcome adversity and the volunteers who make junior sport possible.”
