The two people who died in a fiery late night road crash on the northern beaches were dedicated motoring enthusiasts who were returning from a “cruise” with a local car appreciation club.

Matthew Wong, 23, and 26-year-old Kasia Kulary, were killed when the high-performance Toyota Corolla GR hatchback left the roadway and struck a tree at Balgowlah just before 11pm on Wednesday.

Ms Kulary, a retail worker who grew up in Gordon, was understood to have been in the passenger seat when the car burst into flames on the Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation.

She and Mr Wong, from Sydney’s north, died before emergency services arrived.

Earlier that night the friends had been with a group of other car enthusiasts, members of Car Culture Australia, who had travelled in convoy as part of the group’s regular “meet and cruise” nights.

After more than a dozen cars gathered at Warriewood Square shopping centre from 7.30pm, they set off at 8.15pm to drive to Taronga Zoo.

Northern Beaches detectives, who are preparing a report into the deaths for the NSW Coroner, will look into speed as a possible factor in the incident.

On its Facebook page, Car Culture Australia advises its followers that it “does not encourage hooning or dangerous driving”.
