A popular takeaway chicken chain is set to open on the main street in one of the northern beaches’ swishiest suburbs.
Chargrill Charlie’s, well known for its rotisserie-grilled chooks, is spreading its wings to harbourside Fairlight.
The outlet is taking over the former premises of the Manly Veterinary Clinic, on the corner of Sydney Rd and William St.
It will be competing for customers with nearby The Butcher’s Cafe, a favourite with locals, as well as the Fairlight Kitchen Chinese restaurant and Pizza at Yours.
Manly Vet has already relocated just down the street to 150 Sydney Rd.
A development application for the installation of signage for the outlet has been lodged with Northern Beaches Council.
The use of the existing building, at 156 Sydney Rd, as a Chargrill Charlie’s is currently being looked at by the council for approval through a complying development certificate which should be finalised soon.
Workers are already in the building making modifications.
Chargrill Charlie’s currently has 21 franchises in Sydney including three already on the northern beaches — Dee Why, Frenchs Forest and Mona Vale.
It opened its first restaurant, with the catchphrase “simple food, done well” at Coogee in 1989.
As well as the chargrilled rotisserie chickens, the chain’s menu includes burgers, rolls, schnitzels, salads, fried rice and desserts.
The chain also sells its own brand of bottled sauces and Chargrill Charlie’s online merchandise such as bath salts, deck chairs and Crocs footwear.
In documents lodged to council with the signage plans, the business owners stated that the distinctive bright red and yellow artwork “adds to the visual interest of the building”.
“The design of all signs is simple and does not create any visual impact to the surroundings,” according to a statement of environmental effects,” documents state.
“The signage scheme will enhance the aesthetic qualities of the building and … make a positive contribution to the character of the locality and the vibrancy of the site.”
