Elanora Heights: P-plater, 17, charged over death of teen in Saturday night crash

A P-plater, 17, has been charged over the death of a teenage boy in a Saturday night crash at Elanora Heights.

A P-plate driver has been hit with a string of charges after a teenager was killed when a car left the road and hit a fence on the northern beaches.

The 17-year-old boy, a year 11 student at a northern beaches’ high school, suffered fatal head injuries.

He and five other teens were in the Holden Commodore when it left Caladenia Cl at Elanora Heights during a Saturday night out. The car hit the fence made of sandstone and wrought iron at 11.10pm on July 18.

Police said the boy was sitting in the back seat when the car hit the boundary fence.

Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command and ambulance paramedics tried to save the boy, but he died at the scene.

The driver, also aged 17, was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for mandatory testing. The other passengers – three 16-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl – were also taken to hospital to be checked as a precaution.

All six occupants of the vehicle are northern beaches’ locals.

About 12pm on Tuesday, the driver was arrested at Manly Police Station.

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death; negligent driving occasioning death; not comply licence condition – drive with more than one passenger under 18 years of age after 11pm; drive with four unrestrained passengers; sustained loss of traction and; drive in a speed/manner dangerous.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at a children’s court on August 12.
