DUI accused crashes into petrol tanker

EMERGENCY services feared a fully laden petrol tanker would rupture after being involved in an accident with a car driven by an allegedly drunk driver who was more than four times over the legal limit.
The prime mover struck a rock wall on the western side of Manly Rd, near the intersection with Sydney Rd at Balgowlah, after colliding with a VW Golf about 8.30pm on Wednesday.
One northbound lane on Manly Rd is still closed this morning while Roads and Maritime Services’ officials get ready to tow the vehicle away.
A witness, who lives in Ethel St, said the truck driver told authorities that the car had forced the truck to the left while both vehicles were heading north after crossing The Spit Bridge.
“There was a wheel cover on the road so perhaps the car sideswiped the truck,” the witness said.
NSW Fire & Rescue was called to check that the tanker was not leaking.
No one was injured in the collision, close to Balgowlah RSL, but two lanes on Manly Rd were closed for several hours overnight.
The female driver of the VW was breath tested by officers from the Northern Beaches Police Area Command.
“The driver of a silver VW Golf, a 33-year Dee Why woman, was breath tested at the scene, returning a positive result,” a police spokesman said.
“The woman was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station where she underwent a breath analysis, allegedly returning a reading of 0.222.”
The woman was charged with high-range PCA, and a number of traffic related offences. Her licence was immediately suspended.
She is due to appear at Manly Local Court on Wednesday, October 31.
