Delmar Private Hospital: 80-new luxury beds for boutique northern beaches hospital

A new $25m hospital wing has opened on the northern beaches after patients demanded more luxurious rooms with ensuites — and preferably an ocean view.

A private hospital on the northern beaches has just finished a $25m upgrade, creating 80 new ‘luxury’ rooms for patients.

Delmar Private Hospital in Dee Why now has 100 beds in total, 70 of the new bedrooms are single rooms with ensuites.

Previously there were 45 beds, some of the original rooms were removed as part of the expansion work.

Hospital director Kerri Clare told the Manly Daily the upgrade was needed because patients expect a “boutique experience” when they book into a private hospital. They are also catering for the predicted population increase.

“I’ve been in this business for the last 18 years and in the last five years patients have said they don’t want to share a bathroom,” she said.

“The expectation of people is to have their own private room, with ensuite and a more luxurious, boutique experience.”

Ms Clare said along with the new rooms, many with ocean views, there are also separate inpatient facilities including a new rehabilitation gym and pool.

A new cafe is opening soon and there’s free underground parking.

She said the expansion was a long drawn out process and saw three nearby homes purchased and demolished to make way for the extension.

Ms Clare said Delmar Private has always been a community hospital, with local staff employed.

“You get a more personalised experience, people get to know you by name,” she said.

The hospital, which is in a quiet residential area, opened in 1973, and has five state-of-the-art operating theatres.

A lot of the surgery work is Ears, Nose and Throat, in particular eye surgery such as cataracts; bariatrics (weight loss surgery) and plastic surgery, both cosmetic and reconstructive.

The hospital also receives a lot of post surgery patients from Northern Beaches Hospital and elsewhere that need rehabilitation.

It runs specialist orthopaedic, oncology and heart wellness rehabilitation programs.

Ms Clare said Delmar Private was not just popular with locals who want to have surgery or rehabilitation near to home, but also others looking for specialist surgeons, particularly when it comes to weight loss surgery.

She said they also have a lot of weight loss surgery patients from Western Sydney and Newcastle.

They also get plastic surgery patients from the Eastern suburbs who don’t want to have their operations too close to home in case they are spotted.

“People are very savvy now,” Ms Clare said. “They research their surgeons and infection rates.”

She said being a small hospital Delmar Private had an excellent rating when it comes to infection rates.
