Deadmans, Manly: Is this Sydney’s best ever wave ridden by a surfer?

Is this Sydney’s best ever wave ridden by a surfer? The internet thinks so. Check it out here.

There have been some incredible surfing photos and videos taken during last week’s East Coast Low which saw waves off Sydney hit more than 38ft.

But one video has had over a million views with surfers hailing the wave as the best ever ridden in Sydney.

It shows a very humble Chris Lougher from Manly tackling a spectacular wave off Deadmans at North Head, Manly.

While Mr Lougher doesn’t want too much attention, as he likes to remain private and “just froths on getting big tubes”, the man behind the camera is Spencer Frost and he is delighted to have captured the moment on film.

The 26-year-old professional filmmaker from Avalon said it was the “best paddle wave I’ve ever seen” in Sydney.

He said it was a 12ft barrelling wave, which is pretty much unheard of in this area.

Mr Frost, who was travelling all over the world doing surf shoots until COVID hit, said when he put up the photo on Instagram it went “bonkers”.

Then he followed it up with THAT video.

Now it’s all over the internet and those in the know are saying it is the best wave they ever seen ridden by a surfer.

Incredibly Mr Frost shot it from Queenscliff headland, which explains how he got such a brilliant angle.

“I used a huge zoom from that angle,” Mr Frost said.

“It was a 2400mm lens.

“Queenscliff is a few kilometres away.

“I just happened to be there at the right time, with the right swell and the right wave and have the right eye for it.”

Mr Frost who was also filming surfers Letty Mortensen and Tom Carroll at Deadmans last week, said he wasn’t tempted to put his camera down and join them.

“I’m an everyday surfer,” he said. “I know my limits.”
