Now mayor Michael Regan has invited skaters to come forward and give their opinions on how the skate park, to be included in the development of the North Curl Curl Community Centre, should be built.

The facility has been included in the proposed North Curl Curl Community Centre Masterplan which takes in the former North Curl Curl bowling club site.

The mayor has even gone on to a skating Facebook page to invite suggestions from the skater community.

“Hey all”, Cr Regan wrote. “Some of you might know I am the local Mayor and with your help some time ago, helped push for a skate park here.

“Well, Council is about to start work on building the promised skate park behind the Community Centre at North Curl Curl.

“I have asked my staff to directly get in contact with you so as to start the design process.

“I want you to be part of that from the beginning.

“We will be writing to local residents too, but we really want the people who use it to design it.”

Cr Regan’s invitation has already attracted eight replies.

Skater Ben Douneen posted on Monday: “I would really like to see a street plaza styled skate park with quarterpipes at one end for speed.”

Another skater suggested: “It is important to include both aspects (street and transition) in order to captivate a larger group of skaters to enjoy the skate park “

There was also a call for the park to include designs for bike riders: “There is hardly a line at any skate park on the Beaches that is enjoyable enough to ride on a bike without being a hardcore street BMXer.”

The public push for the skate park begin in 2013 when primary school teacher Glen Smith, who was working at Curl Curl Public School at the time, noticed an increase in children skating on the netball courts in John Fisher Park.

When the children were asked to stop skating on he courts, Mr Smith started lobbying the former Warringah Council.

“We set up a Facebook page and everybody shared it. I talked to council at the time, and they were all for it but didn’t have the funding,” he said back in 2016 before moving to Queensland.
