A school zone around a northern beaches primary school has been extended in a bid to improve safety.
The existing 40km/h speed restrictions around Collaroy Plateau Public School will be extended along Aubreen and Telopea streets.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the move was requested by the school.
“Transport for NSW recently carried out a review of the surrounding roads after a request from the school,” the spokesperson said.
“When the review was completed, a decision was made to extend the school zones along Aubreen and Telopea streets to create one consistent school zone in the area.
“In general 40km/h school zones are provided on roads with an active direct access point from the school but are often extended to improve pedestrian safety.
“The existing school zone on Aubreen Street will be extended 65 metres, with the Telopea Street school zone to be extended by 52 metres.”
The spokesperson said the lower speed limit will reduce the risk and potential severity of a crash.
“School zones help protect children on their way to and from school at times and places where they are often present in high numbers,” the spokesperson said.
New signs will be installed by January 23 and the extended school zones will come in to effect at the start of the new term.
Once installed, the new 40km/h school zones will operate from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on gazetted school days.
