Residents have won a battle against rev-head hoons after authorities agreed to install speed humps on a notorious stretch of a northern beaches’ road.

The humps are set to be placed this month along a section of McCarrs Creek Road at Church Point to cut speeding and dangerous driving by cars and motorbikes.

They will be placed between Church Point and the boundary to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park.

Residents living along the stretch of road have been campaigning and lobbying authorities for six years to tackle the problems of dangerous anti-social behaviour by drivers and motorcycle riders.

They said the winding road, with a 50km/h speed limit, was a magnet for highly modified car and motorbikes that tailgate and intimidate law abiding drivers and cyclists.

In February the Manly Daily reported Mayor Michael Regan had asked the council to call on NSW Roads Andrew Constance to set up a pilot point-to-point, or average speed, camera trial along McCarrs Creek Rd.

The mayor had also met with state Liberal MP for Pittwater Rob Stokes and now -retired Northern Beaches Police commander Dave Darcy, as well as the Bayview Church Residents Association, to identify solutions.

Now the council has confirmed that it was working with Transport for NSW to install the humps.

Mayor Michael Regan said McCarr’s Creek Rd, between Church Point and the national park boundary, had long been a haven for antisocial hoon behaviour and residents have had enough.

“The local community, quite rightly, have said no to those using this stretch of the road as their personal speedway,” he said.

“I worked with local state MP Rob Stokes, NSW Police and members of the Bayview/Church Point Residents Association to make the installation of these speed humps happen.”

The Northern Beaches Local Traffic Committee recently approved a report that the council tabled recommending speed humps.

Michelle Rogers, who set up a campaign group called Stop Speeding On McCarrs, said she and other residents were grateful that the speed humps were being installed, but said hoon slowing methods needed to be placed along the whole road, from Terrey Hills to Church Point as well as on a section of Pittwater Rd through Bayview.

“This is a large breakthrough and we are happy that something is being done after all our campaigning from 2014,” Ms Rogers said.

“But our concern is that the speed bumps will turn the cars back the way they came, causing more problems for people living in places like Terrey Hills and Bayview.

“We would ask that transport officials still look at point to point camnwera, even noise activated cameras, right along McCarrs Crfeek Rd through the national park.”
