CARYS Bradshaw, the seven-year-old student from Manly West Primary School who is battling a rare brain tumour, is responding well to treatment in the UK.

Carys is suffering from Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) and was accepted on to a clinical trial in the UK called Convection Enhanced Delivery (CED).

The trial, in London, involved inserting catheters into the brain and delivering drugs direct to the tumour.

After undergoing a nine- hour operation two months ago, last week she completed her fourth drug infusion.

“She is amazing everybody with her bravery and how well she is coping and responding to the treatment,” mum Rachel said.

“She is having to live with some side effects, but the good news is that after each infusion the doctors have seen steady improvement in the tumour.”

Mrs Bradshaw said there was a long journey ahead.

“Nothing can be guaranteed (but) her great response to treatment is very encouraging – and any improvement with DIPG is a miracle so we are very happy,” she said.

“In herself Carys is happy, is in no pain and is enjoying lots of fun in the UK – although she is really missing the rest of her family and friends in Sydney.”

Carys, a student at Manly West School, began suffering headaches and vomiting in December.

An MRI scan showed a rare and fatal condition called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, an aggressive cancer found deep inside the brain stem.

“There are no words that can describe the complete and shock, grief and helplessness that our family felt when hearing this news,” Rachel Bradshaw, a single parent, wrote on a Gofundme page for Carys.

“The sadness of the prognosis is completely overwhelming and we cannot imagine life without Carys.”
