Patients at Manly and Mona Vale hospitals were very happy with their care in the year leading up to the opening of the Northern Beaches Hospital, a new report reveals.
The results of a Bureau of Health Information 2018 survey found that 79 per cent of Manly Hospital patients and 74 per cent of Mona Vale Hospital patients rated their care as very good.
That’s compared with 67 per cent of patients who rated their care as very good across NSW as a whole.
There are no results recorded for the public-private Northern Beaches Hospital as it only opened at the end of October last year.
Manly Hospital closed when the new Frenchs Forest hospital opened, while Mona Vale Hospital’s acute services were downgraded.
Of patients who were surveyed at Manly Hospital in 2018, 79 per cent rated it as very good, 13 per cent said it was good, five per cent neither good nor bad, two per cent poor and one per cent very poor.
At Mona Vale Hospital, 74 per cent said it was very good, 22 per cent rated it good, two per cent neither good or bad, one per cent poor and one per cent very poor.
This is compared with the overall results for NSW where a smaller percentage rated their care as very good, but 27 per cent rated it as good, four per cent neither good nor bad, one per cent poor and one per cent very poor.
A slightly higher percentage at Manly Hospital rated their care as poor than the NSW average.
BHI Chief Executive, Dr Diane Watson, said most patients in NSW provided positive ratings of their experiences of care in the Adult Admitted Patient Survey.
“Overall, almost all patients (94%) rated their care as very good or good,” Dr Watson said.
“About eight in 10 patients (79%) told us they would speak highly of the care they received during their hospital stay if asked by friends and family.”
Patients were particularly positive about the healthcare professionals who delivered their care, and the results reflect notable improvements from the previous year’s survey:
• 76 per cent of patients rated their nurses as very good – up from 71 per cent in 2017.
• 72 per cent rated their doctors as very good – up from 69 per cent in 2017.
• When asked to rate how well health professionals worked together, 61 per cent said very good – up from 58 per cent in 2017.
