Bracton Industries, Brookvale: COVID-19 killing spray created by family company
A family-run company in Sydney has created the “next generation of disinfectant” that kills COVID-19. And it has been revealed why the product is ideal for use in schools, aged care homes and restaurants.

A family-based company which created the Aussie cleaning staple Pine-O-Cleen back in 1960s has devised a world-first in the fight against COVID-19.
Last week Bracton Industries on Sydney’s northern beaches saw its new foam surface cleaner, which contains no hazardous chemicals, given the green light by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
There is no other product with these ingredients approved anywhere else in the world.
Most disinfectants that kill viruses contain alcohol, bleach or ammonia.
However, this product uses a blend of amphoteric surfactant which is not only non-toxic and non-corrosive but also biodegradable, so is safe for the user and better for the environment.
It is also 99.999 per cent effective in killing bacteria and 99.99 per cent effective in killing COVID-19 in five minutes.
Ben Hudghton, from Bracton Industries said their data shows the product can kill the coronavirus in 60 seconds and that it offers ongoing protection against COVID for up to 10 days. Their data is currently under review.
He said because the ingredients are not harmful, it is a good choice to use in bars and restaurants, commercial kitchens, schools and aged care homes.
“It is a world first and the next generation of disinfectant,” Mr Hudghton said.
“We’ve used the formulations for many years, but not quite in this way.
“You could say it has been under-utilised.”
Mr Hudghton said getting approval for the new product had been stressful. The tests alone cost $50,000.
He said Bracton Industries is a small company with just 40 staff, up against some of the big multinationals which have been pushing out new products too.
He said while the big companies appeared to be getting priority from the TGA for approvals, their product submitted in April was not approved until last week.
It followed a nudge from Warringah MP Zali Steggall who wrote to the Health Minister Greg Hunt questioning why the process was taking so long.
Mr Hudghton said Bracton Industries is the quintessential Aussie family business.
His great grandfather and grandfather formed it, his father Michael, mother Susanne and two other siblings Joel and Ashlea, also work for the company.
Now based in Brookvale, Bracton Industries was behind the creation of Pine O Cleen, which was later sold to another company.
It is now a major supplier of cleaning products for schools, aged care and hospitality, including Merivale.
It hopes to use the new technology to create hand sanitiser.
