Belrose students first group to win Premier’s Reading Challenge award
The next generation of authors, illustrators and artists from a school in Belrose take home a division in the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge NewsLocal Words and Art Competition.
BUDDING authors, illustrators and artists from Belrose Public School are basking in a statewide limelight after claiming a division in a competition promoting a love for reading.
The pupils from class 2IW have been crowned winners of the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge NewsLocal Words and Art Competition in the Years K-2 category.
As a result, they were visited by Australian illustrator Tom Jellett this week.
He has illustrated a number of books for children, including Australia At The Beach by Max Fatchen, Why I Love Footy for Penguin Books, The Gobbledygook Is Eating A Book by Justine Clarke and My Dad Thinks He’s Funny by Katrina Germein.
Jellett went to see the group of 27 on Thursday to share the ins and outs of writing, illustrating and putting books together.
He also signed and gave books to the children as part of the occasion.
Georgie Monahanchaffer and Amy Fortescue, aged 7 and 8, said the illustrator was “very nice and funny”.
And their favourite thing about being part of the competition was creating cassowaries out of paper mache.
“We also had to make snakes and it was really fun,” Georgie said.
“I like to paint and draw.”
Amy said: “I love paper mache and do lots of drawings and sketches at home.
“Dogs, cats and other animals are my favourite things to sketch.”
Students taking part in the 2018 Premiers Reading Challenge NewsLocal Words and Art Competition — split into Years K-2, Years 3-6 and Years 7-9 sections — were required submit an artwork based on a book of their choice.
Belrose students created a 3D piece on picture book Where The Forest Meets The Sea by Jeannie Baker.
It was chosen by the judging panel for showing a clear understanding of the content and meaning of the book.
Each student received a certificate of achievement.
