Before and After: Iconic spots on the northern beaches

A lot has changed on the northern beaches in the past 100 years — while some things haven’t. This interactive special showcases photos of some of the peninsula’s most recognisable spots in a way like you have never seen before.

SOUTH CURL CURL ROCK POOL

Ninety years separate these photos of South Curl Curl rock pool, which was built in 1927 by Warringah Council at the request of the South Curl Curl Bathing Committee. The Committee was formed by the Curl Curl Improvement Association and South Curl Curl SLSC and the surf club contributed money for the pool’s construction.

BARRENJOEY RD, NEWPORT

There have been a few changes at Newport over the past 50 years, not least of which has been the amount of traffic on Barrenjoey Rd. And the road has also changed a bit since the older picture was taken in the early 1960s. It has been widened from two lanes to six, with a median strip to boot, and even has curbing and guttering, and a concrete footpath from the top of the hill to the bottom.

SEAFORTH OVAL

In 1973, Seaforth Oval was a distant outpost with a small amenities block and a small carpark – and a fabulous view of the city. Forty-six years later, the oval enjoys far greater use, the carpark is much larger and the amenities block has been replaced to include sports amenity buildings. The oval also has floodlighting.

KALINYA ST, NEWPORT

The view south along Kalinya St at Newport has certainly changed over the years. In the older picture, taken in 1913, the store of Jack and Gertrude Barrett can be seen. Beyond it, the Newport Hotel has been demolished and is being rebuilt in brick. The Barretts’ store was where the Newport Mirage now stands.

MARINE PDE, MANLY

It’s not hard to spot the differences between the new and the old pictures of the southern end of Manly Beach as seen from Marine Pde. Quite apart from the clothing, the most obvious change is to the buildings that have been home to Manly Life Saving Club.
