Beau Isiah Gomes - aka B.I.G - breaks record for biggest baby born at Northern Beaches Hospital
Beau Gomes has broken the record for the biggest baby born at Northern Beaches Hospital — weighing in at a hefty 5.27kg —and because of his name he will never be able to forget it.
Beau Isiah Gomes’ initials — B.I.G — were deliberately chosen after he broke the record for the biggest baby born at Northern Beaches Hospital.
He arrived on February 16, weighing a hefty 5.27kg. The average newborn is just 3.5kg.
Beau weighs more than the average domestic cat or the equivalent of 15 cans of Campbell’s condensed tomato soup.
His parents Suzie, 37, and Ravick, 39, of Cromer, are all smiles now, but there was a moment during Beau’s birth when they were fearful for his life.
“I had a prolapsed umbilical cord and suddenly the birth became an emergency,” Mrs Gomes said. “Every time I had a contraction there was a chance the cord could rupture.
“His heart was also dropping. My midwife jumped up onto my bed with me to help as I was being pushed into theatre.”
Mrs Gomes said her Midwifery Group Practice midwife Karen Middleton, who has been with her throughout her pregnancy, saved his life.
And, with her help Mrs Gomes managed to give birth naturally, just minutes before the team were about to give her a general anaesthetic for a C-section.
“The theatre was packed with people, Mrs Gomes said. “There was a big audience for the arrival of a big baby.”
Beau has two brothers, Zack, five, who was born weighing 3.85 kilos, and Jai, two, who weighed 4.5 kilos. Mrs Gomes said with her being 6ft 1 and her husband Ravick, 6ft 5, their offspring will probably be on the big side too.
