AUTHORITIES are urging people to stay out of Narrabeen Lagoon after a shark was spotted this morning.
Northern Beaches Council started putting up shark warning signs around the lagoon after a member of the public reported seeing the shark cruising near the Pittwater Rd bridge at 7.20am.
A council officer, on a jet ski, has been patrolling an area north of the bridge, near the Woolworths supermarket on Lagoon St, to try and spot the shark.
The council has also advised businesses including stand-up paddle board and kayak and canoe hire outlets, a well as the Lakeside caravan park at Narrabeen, about the sighting.
The sighting comes just days after an unconfirmed weekend report of a “great white” seen in the lagoon after its entrance was opened to the sea at North Narrabeen.
A video, purporting to show the shark’s dorsal fin, was uploaded and posted on social media titled “Great white spotted in Narrabeen Lagoon”.
The shark spotting App, Dorsal Watch, which lists shark sightings around the world, featured a report at 7.23pm from North Narrabeen of a “fin spotted from shore”.
Council CEO Ray Brownlee confirmed it had been advised of a shark sighting.
“Our Beach Services Team is investigating and warning signs are being erected at key points around the lagoon as a precaution,” Mr Brownlee said.
“We ask the community to be aware.”
“Shark sighted” signs are being erected in parks around the lagoon including Bilarong Reserve, Jamieson Park and Berry Reserve.
On Saturday morning a dead 2.9m female bull shark was found washed up at Station Beach, on the Pittwater side of Palm Beach.
The cause of death is unknown.
Rob Townsend, Displays Manager at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium said the shark could have died as a “result of run-off from this weekend’s high volume rainfall”.
