A Maserati-driving drug dealer has been jailed for three years after being busted selling methamphetamine and ecstasy from high-end designer bags across north Sydney.

Alec Kovac, 29, also had $13,200 in cash, deemed proceeds of the illicit drug trade, on him when he was arrested last year.

The Mosman man was sentenced for a string of offences, including two counts of supplying a prohibited drug, in Manly Local Court on Thursday.

The court heard Kovac was in possession of 102g of methamphetamine, known to its users as “ice”, when he was arrested in Miller St, North Sydney, early on August 10, 2023.

Police found that drug inside a Gucci bag he was carrying.

Officers also discovered 49g of ecstasy, stored in several ziplock plastic bags, inside a Pierre Carden backpack.

Kovac had messages on his mobile phone that indicated a number of drug transactions had taken place, as well as a set of scales.

A knife was also found in the Maserati Ghibli he was driving.

The court also heard Kovac had been caught in possession of an unregistered pistol — a Glock-style gel blaster — in his car at Leichhardt in July 2023.

His solicitor told magistrate Margaret McGlynn that Kovac had a drug use problem of his own, as well as a number of mental health issues that included post-traumatic stress disorder and ADHD, which had played a role in his offending.

He said Kovac had been abducted, bashed and seriously injured when he was 18, and that the drug dealer had a troubled upbringing.

Kovac faced more than a dozen charges, including the drug supply offences, and was also sentenced for possessing an unregistered firearm, having custody of a knife in a public place, escaping from lawful custody, resisting arrest, driving while disqualified and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

In sentencing, Ms McGlynn told Kovac she had taken into account his mental health and difficult youth when deciding to jail him.

“I accept there is a nexus between your offending and your diagnoses and the shocking incident when you were abducted,” she told the 29-year-old.

But Ms McGlynn went on to say she had to deter others from similar offending by jailing Kovac, and the sentence was an acknowledgment of the harm done to the community by prohibited drugs.

“I have to protect the community from weapons and drug supply offences,” she said.

“There was a pistol in the driver’s footwell of the car.

“You were running around with an unregistered pistol, with your drug and unresolved mental health issues.

“(It was) a recipe for disaster.”

Ms McGlynn imposed an 18-month non-parole period.

She backdated the sentence to February this year to account for time already spent in custody, making Kovac eligible for release in August 2025.
