A talented northern beaches family has created and produced a quirky, adult cartoon series currently being streamed on Netflix.
Mark Gravas and Sandra Walters, of Killarney Heights, co-created, financed and produced the animated series called Adventure Beast.
It went live on Netflix on October 22 and has been described as an adult comedy, adventure animation, with an educational wildlife slant.
Ms Walters said it was “hard to pigeon hole”, but as an adult comedy cartoon it could be compared with South Park in that regard, but it was very much about wildlife.
“We are looking for a wide audience that love wildlife, comedy and animation,” she said.
“We were going for a family audience, but then some of the wildlife facts are quite graphic which has tipped us into the adult only area.”
Based on the real life character and friend, naturalist and author Bradley Trevor Greive, the series centres around his wildlife adventures, along with his niece Bonnie and field assistant Dietrich.
“In one episode he talks about the sexuality of animals and how some are bisexual and how that relates to humans,” Ms Walters said.
“In another we look at why pandas pee while doing handstands and it’s actually a power thing - who can shoot pee into the highest branches.”
Ms Walters, who co-own Kapow Pictures with her partner Mr Gravas, was also supported in the project by their three daughters, who are all in their 20s.
Lauren was the line producer, Melani production assistant and Claire was a character and prop designer.
The family worked with a remote crew of 70, mainly across NSW.
Ms Walters said it was quite an achievement to produce the 12, 18 minute-long episodes remotely, during a pandemic, as well as getting Netflix to take it on.
She said she hoped the series did well because it was entirely an Australian creation.
