A tradie who had a head-on crash after knocking back up to five pints of beer was warned he could have ended up in the morgue before being disqualified from driving.
Adam Rogan, 30, of Queenscliff, had the prang when he was behind the wheel of his work’s Mitsubishi Triton ute on North Steyne, on the Manly beachfront, at 10.53pm on a Friday night.
Rogan told police he had been drinking after a recent split with his fiance.
Magistrate Robyn Denes was also told that he had been suffering severe financial difficulties after falling victim to a financial scam.
Rogan pleaded guilty to one count of high range drink driving.
He blew 0.154 — three times over the legal limit.
In a facts sheet tendered to court, police stated that late on July 7, the ute Rogan was driving crossed double unbroken centre lines on North Steyne “into oncoming traffic”.
It collided with another vehicle “head-on”, “causing significant damage”.
An ambulance was called, but no one was injured in the collision.
Rogan later police he had four to five pints of beer before he drove.
His solicitor said the split with his fiance and losing money to a scammer had “affected his psyche”.
The court heard that Rogan would have to pay “substantial” compensation for damaging the other vehicle
Magistrate Denes told Rogan that he was a drink driver who crashed after making a selfish, reckless and irresponsible decision.
“You could be in a morgue,” she said.
“Someone else could be in a morgue.”
Ms Denes said many people were under “significant pressure at the moment”, but do not decide to drive after they've been drinking.
Rogan was handed a Community Correction Order to be of good behaviour for two years and disqualified from driving for nine months.
