A janitor, 62, who grabbed the buttocks and breasts of a 14-year-old female shop assistant who was serving him at a Sydney store, will be sentenced in a Sydney court next month.

The man was caught after the teenage victim’s angry mother managed to grab him outside the homewares variety shop on the northern beaches and hold him until police arrived.

Abdul Sattar, 62, of Beacon Hill, had pulled the girl into a hug and twice tried to kiss her when he visited the shop where the girl worked after school, about 4.30pm on April 17.

Sattar knew the girl, vaguely, from when she previously worked at a shopping centre where he was a janitor, Manly Local Court heard on Thursday.

The girl, who was alone in the shop, was assisting Sattar with buying a ski mask when he called her to the rear of the store, according to an agreed set of facts prepared by the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Sattar put his arm around the girl and “directed her to a different area of the store”.

“He embraced her in a hug and lent in and kissed her on the right cheek,” the facts sheet stated.

Sattar then squeezed her buttocks with his right hand.

As the girl tried to push him away, he said “it’s okay, it’s okay”.

The man then felt the 14-year-old’s left breast.

Then, as she tried to pull away from his embrace, he tried to kiss her again.

The girl, who was described as being “visibly distressed” by members of the public, then went to the counter where she processed Sattar’s purchase. At the same time, she called her mother.

Passers-by called the police and just minutes later, the girl’s mother arrived and grabbed Sattar by the shirt outside the shop. She held him until police arrived.

He was taken to Manly police station where he was interviewed with the assistance of a Hindi interpreter.

Sattar pleaded guilty to five counts of intentionally sexually touch a child (aged between 10 and 15 years).

He will be sentenced in Manly Local Court on September 25.
