A CLEARWAY extending from Mona Vale through Military Rd-Spit Junction to the city is looking like a reality, with MPs either side of The Spit Bridge open to the option.

North Shore MP Felicity Wilson told the Manly Daily she would listen to all options to improve congestion.

“All options are on the table as we explore ways of further addressing the traffic nightmare of Military Rd and the rat running in our local streets,” she said.

Any future proposal also has to address the parking needs of our small businesses, which are the hub of our community services.”

Meanwhile, Manly state MP James Griffin met disgruntled shopkeepers where a clearway is proposed in Condamine St, Manly Vale this week.

He has since arranged for the Roads and Maritime Services clearway strategy team to meet the shop owners.

“But, equally, I got quite a few emails from people saying well done and, in particular, if we can do it here, what is good for us should be good enough for the people of Cremorne and Mosman,” Mr Griffin said.

He said some parking concerns could be addressed with upgrades to the B-Line infrastructure but acknowledged that more needed to be done.

“It is not just ramming clearways through, it is about understanding and determining where clearways can be put,” he said.

But shop owners in Condamine St, Manly Vale, said it would destroy them and turn the vibrant strip into “another Parramatta Rd”.

GP Kiril Goring-Siebert said: “On Parramatta Rd people can’t access businesses and the shops closed down and it became derelict. I wouldn’t want to see Manly Vale go that way.”

There is a pharmacist, general practitioner, physiotherapist, chiropractor on the stretch, about 500m long.

Dr Goring-Siebert said a lot of elderly people used the parking. “They can’t walk very far and to have the convenience of being able to park outside is fantastic for them,” he said.

“To remove that ability means they are going to have trouble accessing the businesses and health services here.”

Total Physiotherapy Manly Vale owner Donna White said it would have “a significant impact on our clients, many of whom have limited mobility”.

She said almost half her clients parked in Condamine St and many would stay longer than the one-hour limit proposed for the side streets.

Tiles By Kate owners - Eliza O’Sullivan and Georgie Wicks said clients picked up multiple 25kg boxes and without adequate pick-up and drop-off people would not come.

Pharmacist Lachlan Rose said the street was not congested enough during the day to need a 24-hour clearway, with one already in place from 3pm.

A carpark under construction for the B-Line has been offered up as an alternative.

“That carpark will be solely for Opal card users, it is designed for commuters and will be full by 8am,” Mr Rose said.

Multiple shop owners said it was too far away to attract people to their stores.
