WOLLONILLY Council wants Telstra and Bingara Gorge developer Lendlease to build a new telecommunications tower to service the development following complaints about mobile coverage from residents.
Councillor Matthew Deeth said residents had been left with inadequate mobile coverage in the area and said the council should request Hume federal Liberal MP Angus Taylor to add the area to the Federal Government’s black spot program if the issue wasn’t resolved in the next two months.
“This has been an ongoing issue,” he said.
“They have fibre optic cables in the ground and that’s working fine in regards to internet.
“But when it comes to running small businesses, people can’t use their mobile phones in their houses.”
Cr Deeth said an existing tower in the area only provided limited coverage and was designed to handle mobile traffic from the nearby Hume Freeway.
“It hasn’t been upgraded in years,” he said.
Cr Deeth also said the council should be pushing for other telecommunications providers to construct towers before the planned major development begins in Wilton.
Cr Matthew Gould suggested council look to lease unused land at a discounted rate to make it easier for telecommunications providers to build a tower.
