Wests Tigers tuned up for its NRL season opener against the Gold Coast Titans next week, in its 22-8 win over Cronulla at Campbelltown on Saturday night.

Fans were treated to a full fixture of entertainment, with Wests Tigers’ Harold Matthews and SG Ball teams enjoying hit-outs alongside the club’s Holden Cup, NSW Cup and NRL teams on a crowded night of football.

Former Camden Ram James Tedesco was a highlight, making an impression on his return from knee injury.

The fleet-footed fullback had lost none of his speed, and in the second half of the game pounced on a loose ball before chipping Cronulla fullback Michael Gordon and outpacing other players to the goal area.

Tedesco said it was instinct and a bit of luck that helped him score the try.

He said his main goal this year was to get through the season without sustaining any injuries.

“I’m not thinking about the injuries of the past; I’m just focused on having positive thoughts and playing some good footy,” he said.

The Sharks led 8-0 at half-time but ill-discipline and poor kicking left them behind.

A small crowd of 3709 gathered to watch the trial.

The NRL season starts on Thursday, March 5, when the Brisbane Broncos take on reigning champions South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Wests Tigers travel to Gold Coast for their clash on Saturday, March 7.
