A teenager accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl twice in Sydney’s southwest last year has had grooming charges dropped in court.

Tommy Tran, 18, of Mount Pritchard, faced Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday where two charges of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity were dropped.

He remains charged with four counts of having sexual intercourse with a child between the ages of 14 and 16.

Police originally received reports on November 28 that the girl, who can’t be named for legal reasons, had been groomed and sexually assaulted by a man she met through social media.

Mr Tran was arrested by detectives about 1.30pm on December 1, following an investigation by the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.

Police allege the 18-year-old had sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old girl twice without her consent after providing her with alcohol.

They allege the offending occurred on November 7 in Liverpool and November 21 in Cabramatta.

Mr Tran was originally refused bail before being released from custody in December.

He is due to appear back in court on May 26 to enter pleas.
