THE Macarthur region is again punching above its weight when it comes to national and international sporting representation.
The region will have three athletes and one umpire at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow starting tomorrow.
Patriotic locals can pin their hopes on swimmer Daniel Tranter in the 200m individual medley and 200m breaststroke, Warren Potent in the small bore rifle men’s prone event, and Jayden Lawrence in the wrestling.
Hockey umpire Kylie Seymour will also have an important role in the hockey competition.
Tranter’s former coach Benjamin Tuxford said the swimmer was a great role model for his current charges.
“It’s very exciting, not only for me but for all of the kids in our local area,” Tuxford said. “They’re all doing the hard yards now and Daniel is showing them where that hard work can take you.”
Lawrence has been in Glasgow for a week training with the other seven members of the wrestling squad.
Despite not being able to be there in person, Lawrence’s mum Katrina said there would be plenty of support coming from Catherine Field.
“His family and grandmothers will all be watching,” she said.
“We have a big screen we’ll be watching it on.
“We chat on the internet and on Facebook. Each day I’ll have a quick chat with him.
“He’s very much hoping to strive for a medal.”
Amazingly, this will be Potent’s fourth Commonwealth Games campaign and he is just as excited this time around.
The Currans Hill shooter said representing Australia never got old.
“I’m expecting to do well,” he said.
“Anything can happen in the final. My ranking is back up to number three and I’ve got my form back to where it needs to be.”
Campbelltown international hockey umpire Seymour said she was proud to be going to the Games.
“Anyone who loves sport knows what an honour it is to be involved in either the Commonwealth or Olympic Games,” she said.
