Daniel Geale’s Anthony Mundine dream: ‘Everyone loves punching that guy’
Two-time world champion Daniel Geale, has re-emerged from the boxing wilderness and declared he’s keen for a rematch with Anthony Mundine.
One of Anthony Mundine’s oldest foes, two-time world champion Daniel Geale, has re-emerged from the boxing wilderness and declared he would “seriously consider” a rematch with the sport’s pantomime villain.
Geale, 38, has been MIA after a surprise defeat to a relatively-unknown Renold Quinlan in 2016.
Training in solitude at his southwest Sydney home, Geale said Mundine could be the fight to reignite his career.
“Everyone loves punching the guy,” Geale said.
“I wouldn’t say no to doing it again. It could be the thing that gets the hunger and desire back.
“If the opportunity came up, I would seriously think about it.”
A fight next year would mark the 10th anniversary of start of the fierce Mundine-Geale rivalry, with no love lost between the pair across the years. Mundine won their 2009 IBO world middleweight title fight in Brisbane by split decision.
When the pair met again in Sydney in 2013, Geale retained his IBF world middleweight title by unanimous decision.
On next Friday night’s bout, Geale said despite the fact Mundine was ‘cashing in’, the result could go either way.
“(Mundine) still has some skills and he has proved that in his past fight or two,” Geale said.
“He can be dangerous. He is the much bigger fighter so I think that plays a role as well.
“For Horn, it depends on how he has taken that loss (to Crawford).
“It was a bit disappointing for him — he believed he was in with a big chance against Crawford but unfortunately Crawford is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.”
