A multimillion-dollar hotel standing up to seven storeys in height may soon call Gledswood Hills home, with Camden Council paving the way for the towering development last night.
Wests Group Macarthur plan to construct a hotel on the Raby Rd site of Camden Lakeside Golf Club, featuring about 120 rooms in two towers overlooking the golf course.
At last night’s meeting, council gave the green light to the draft planning proposal which has boosted the site’s maximum height limit from 9.5m to 22.5m.
Liberal councillor Lara Symkowiak told councillors a multistorey hotel would be a positive for the area, with increasing numbers of people visiting for sporting events and tourism.
“So many people want to come to our area and there are not enough hotel rooms,” she said.
“In these particular circumstances, I am supportive of amending the maximum building height.”
Independent councillor Eva Campbell voted against the draft planning proposal and criticised it’s design, although accepted it would bring “some” benefits.
“I have a problem with this (draft planning proposal) because of the design that we have,” she said.
“The change in height, from nine to 22.5m, is a huge leap.”
The Chronicle haspreviously revealed globally renowned Mercure are in line to operate the hotel.
Wests Group Macarthur CEO Tony Mathew said it was exciting news and would look to lodge development application documents “as soon as possible”.
“As a result (of last night’s meeting), we will look at proceeding and lodging our plans for the hotel as soon as possible,” he said.
“As soon as we can get all of our
Wests Group Macarthur CEO Tony Mathew told the Chronicle last year that short-term accommodation options were in high demand throughout the area.
“There is such a high demand in the Camden area for hotels, which is why we have pushed for so long,” he said.
“This proposal has currently been about three years in the making.
“It is a lot of money and time but we know the area needs it and the demand is there.”
A development application has not yet been lodged for the site.
