A MULTI-MILLION dollar hotel, standing up to seven storeys in height and with links around the world, has been endorsed by Camden Council.

The hotel, on the site of Lakeside Golf Club Camden, owned by Wests Group Macarthur, will be aligned with globally renowned Mercure, who operate more than 750 hotels across the globe.

Wests Group Macarthur CEO Tony Mathew said short-term accommodation options were in high demand throughout the area.

“There is such a high demand in the Camden area for hotels, which is why we have pushed for so long,” he said.

“This proposal has currently been about three years in the making.

“It is a lot of money and time but we know the area needs it and the demand is there.”

The hotel will include two towers, two levels of basement parking and about 120 rooms. Rooms will cater from corporate professionals, recreational golfers to family stays, with rooms to overlook the Greg Norman-designed Lakeside Golf Club Camden golf course and lake.

Lakeside Golf Club Camden will seek to enhance its standing as a premium wedding venue, with the hotel to feature a bridal room, honeymoon suite, as well as landscaped gardens and function centre to host the wedding ceremonies.

Camden councillors unanimously endorsed the variation in height limit, from 9.5m to 22m, noting it would be dysfunctional and uneconomical to operate a two-storey hotel.

Camden Liberal Mayor Lara Symkowiak said she expected the hotel to be popular.

“I think it will be well-used and bring tourism to the area, as well as stimulating a number of jobs,” she said.

“I am very supportive of the proposal from a jobs and business point of view, as well as allowing the business to grow and be sustainable on its own site.”

The Camden Council-endorsed hotel proposal is now awaiting a Gateway Determination by the Department of Planning and Environment.

It follows Macarthur Developments recently announced the $20 million development of Emerald Hills Village shopping centre, located opposite Camden Lakeside Golf Course.

A $2.9 million grant has also been accepted by Camden Council, to begin advance planning and design of a Raby Rd upgrade.
