A PRIMARY school student in southwest Sydney has found a sewing needle hidden in a strawberry during a school morning tea break.
A notice sent to parents today from St Thomas More Catholic Parish Primary School principal Phillip Barrington said the young female student had found the sewing needle during a fruit break this morning.
The student was unharmed.
Catholic Education Office Wollongong Diocese media spokesman Tim Gilmour said the school, in Ruse near Campbelltown, immediately notified police and the student’s parents.
Mr Gilmour said this was the third incident at a school across the Wollongong Diocese in the past 24 hours.
“We’re asking parents to remain vigilant; if your student has brought fruit from home please check it and cut it up before sending them to school,” he said.
“In each case the fruit has been brought from home.”
School canteens across the Wollongong Diocese have been instructed to check all fruit being served.
“Our school canteens have been doing that since the beginning of this whole issue,” Mr Gilmour said.
“Most of our fruit comes from wholesalers so that reduces the risk but our staff have been instructed to check the fruit and slice it up.”
Campbelltown Police Area Command crime manager Detective Inspector Greg Inger said police had received a report this morning about a sewing needle being found in a strawberry but he was unable to confirm if it was the same incident.

“The incident is still under investigation,” he said.
Inspector Inger said police had received numerous reports across the Campbelltown region in the past few days.
