IT’S been a long time coming but work is finally set to begin that will make the Campbelltown Sports and Health Centre of Excellence a reality.

Plans for the first stage of the state-of-the-art sports facility have been lodged as part of a development application, with construction due to start at the end of this year or early next year.

Stage one of the centre will link with sports fields from the Macarthur Heights development.

The first stage of the $25 million facility, which will be based at Western Sydney University, will include indoor multipurpose sports halls, elite athletic and general public gym facilities, and a warm water recovery pool that will also accommodate swimming classes.

Campbelltown Council city lifestyles director Lisa Miscamble said meeting rooms and office accommodation, community health and a GP clinic provided through WSU would also form part of stage one.

“The facility will have access to multiple playing fields that are provided through a separate development agreement as part of the Macarthur Heights development,” Ms Miscamble said.

“Any future stage would be scoped and planned to work within the design once the DA is assessed and approved.”

There is no word yet on which sporting organisations will be anchored within the facility.

Ms Miscamble said a number of community and state-based sporting organisations had signalled their interest in using the facility following a call for expressions of interest from council last year.

“Which organisations will occupy the facility has not been confirmed at this stage,” she said.

Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic said the Centre of Excellence’s location at WSU would benefit the whole of the Macarthur region and the facility would cater to both elite and grassroots athletes.

“It’s going to be a fantastic facility for the community and I’m very happy the plans have been submitted,” Cr Brticevic said.

When asked if the facility could be used as a training base for the United for Macarthur A-League bid if successful, Cr Brticevic said a number of options were on the table.

“We’re still in the early stages of deciding where the training facilities would be located and have to take into account our partnership with other councils,” he said.

Campbelltown Council is putting $15 million towards the development with $7.23 million provided by the Federal Government as part of a promise at the 2016 election to try and keep in power former Macarthur MP Russell Matheson, a long-term advocate for the project.
