Paul Mila, Dylan Taylor, Anita Czuper: Surry Hills brawl sentence

It started out as birthday drinks among friends at a popular pub in Surry Hills. But later on, the party descended into “out-of-control” chaos, with a brawl that included wild punches, hair pulls, chokeholds and an MMA fighter knocked out cold.

Boozy birthday celebrations which ended in wild punches, hair pulls, chokeholds, swinging jackets and a promising MMA fighter knocked out cold has landed four friends in court.

The Downing Centre Local Court heard “out-of-control” street violence took place when Dylan Taylor, 28, Anita Czuper, 23 and Paul Stanley Mila, 23 left popular Surry Hills watering hole The Beresford Hotel about 930pm on November 16 last year.

The crew, which the court heard included members who had been drinking since 12 noon, exchanged words with three men walking along Bourke St before one of the strangers launched a punch.

Chaos took over the street with promising MMA fighter Salani Mila knocked out cold while chasing down the stranger. Mila was sentenced previously and avoided a criminal conviction for his role in the affray.

Once Mila was floored small business owner Dylan Taylor, of Leumeah, his cousin Jake Hunter Taylor, 21, and his employee Paul Mila, of Macquarie Fields, intervened.

Jake Taylor, of Gregory Hills, arrived in an Uber and began fighting a man with his cousin Dylan, with the pair holding the victim in a chokehold and punching him in the back.

Paul Mila bashed another man which saw the victim knocked to ground and punched and kicked in the head.

Airds’ Anita Czuper, whose brother Joseph was involved in the affray and sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order, repeatedly punched a woman walking by and later swung her jacket at a police officer. A court-ordered report revealed the Czuper was “impulsive and emotional”, with her lawyer saying she had been dealing with a break-up and was racially abused by the victim.

The court heard Paul Mila also attacked the female victim by forcefully pulling her by the hair.

All four people pleaded guilty to affray, with Anita Czuper also pleading guilty to assault police officer in execution of duty.

Mila was sentenced to a nine-month jail term, to be served in the community by way of an intensive correction order, and ordered to complete 100 hours community service.

Anita Czuper and Dylan Taylor were sentenced to 18-month community correction orders and also ordered to complete 100 hours community service.

Jake Taylor was also sentenced to a community corrections order and must complete 50 hours community service.
