Opposition leader says timeline needed for M9 gazettal

NSW Labor leader Jodi McKay says people just want certainty about the M9 Outer Sydney Orbital. Transport for NSW could not confirm if the corridor would be gazetted this year.

Record infrastructure spend must be ‘the new norm’

NSW Opposition leader Jodi McKay says it’s high time the community had certainty about the M9 Outer Sydney Orbital, which still has no confirmed timeline on its gazettal.

Ms McKay, speaking exclusively to the Chronicle, said the community just simply want to know what is going on.

“(The communities) just need certainty,” she said. “At the moment, there is absolutely no certainty.”

When pressed on Labor’s position on the eight-lane motorway, which will link the Hume Motorway near Menangle to the Western Sydney Airport, Ms Mckay acknowledged transport infrastructure was necessary in the growing region.

“We know there needs to be infrastructure,” she said. “But at the moment, we are three and a half years away from a government so it’s not up to us to land on a position right now.

“We want to know what they (the Liberal government) are going to do.”

Camden Liberal MP Peter Sidgreaves said he believed the M9 Orbital would be gazetted this year.

“It’s not just the Sydney Orbital (that will be gazetted), it's a number of other things like pieces of rail infrastructure — the South West Rail Link and the North South Rail Line.

“They are all going to be gazetted together as a single package.”

Transport for NSW was asked by the Chronicle if gazettal was expected to take place this year. No direct answer was received.

A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said the corridors exhibited last year were currently being refined.

“We are responding to the more than 6000 submissions received during community consultation and refinements are being considered where feasible,” she said.

“Once the refinements are made, the NSW Government will advise landowners and the community regarding next steps.”
