The Sydney cricket community is in mourning following the loss of one of it’s most passionate and dedicated members.

Noel Laming, 86, the inaugural President of the Campbelltown Camden District Cricket Club, passed away on Saturday at Campbelltown Hospital.

He had previously been in aged care and suffering from cancer.

The much loved and admired Mr Laming was well know for his dedication to cricket and also active in charity work and fundraising.

In 2014 the Macarthur Chronicle published a story on how Mr Laming had discovered a first edition of the cricket bible Wisden in a metal cabinet full of cricket memorabilia in his garage.

Former Southern Districts cricket umpire Edward “Ted” Hoenger had bequeathed Mr Laming almost 150 cricket books, including a Wisden dating back to 1864.

Mr Laming, who was also a former President of Ingleburn and Southern Districts cricket clubs, donated the treasure trove to the Bradman Museum in Bowral.

“Noel was an amazing man with incredible character,” said former Ghosts and international cricketer Brett Lee in a tribute to Mr Laming

“Someone who would put others first. A cricket lover that was passionate about the club. RIP.”

The Ghosts club said Mr Laming will be remembered as “a progressive leader, reformist, outstanding volunteer, and cricket enthusiast.”

“Noel served the Macarthur in numerous ways, including the Catholic community, charity fundraising and real estate … all whilst fathering a large family.

“However, Noel’s service to cricket was outstanding, especially in laying the foundations of the Campbelltown Camden District Cricket Club as well as his tenure as Chairman of the Sydney Cricket Association.’’

NSW Premier Cricket manager Roy Formica also paid tribute.

“Noel was a tremendous servant to cricket within NSW,’ he said.

“He served on various positions in NSW cricket associations, was chairman of the Sydney Cricket Association and a life member.’’
