The drive to equip the area surrounding Western Sydney Airport has ramped up, with NBN Co landing a massive contract to deliver full fibre to a 2100-home development near the new international transport hub.
The state-owned corporation will roll out 11km of fibre throughout the new Birling Estate development, which is part of a larger southwest Sydney precinct set to house more than 20,000 people, giving new residents access to what NBN described as “the fastest available” residential internet speeds.
Many of the upcoming airport’s employees are expected to live at Birling Estate, located in Cobbitty, just 8km from the site of the airport.
“We can’t wait to see them use full fibre to its full potential,” NBN Co’s executive general manager of new developments, Andrew Walsh, said.
The general manager of Birling Estate developer Cameron Brae Group, Paul Gerlach, said the community was designed to be “a place where residents can thrive.
“Having access to high speed internet is a crucial part of that vision,” he said.
“We are excited to partner with NBN to bring full fibre into our development, ensuring that our residents have the best possible digital infrastructure to support their work, education, and entertainment needs.
“This is especially the case for people who take up a job at the Western Sydney International Airport, which has supercharged employment opportunities in the region.
“They will get to enjoy the increased prosperity and connectivity that our thriving community offers, both physically and digitally.”
The airport, expected to open in mid-2026, is being built to service 10 million passengers per year.
Another major project under way to connect Sydneysiders to the new facility is the M12, a toll-free motorway that is now more than 70 per cent complete.
