Learning gap between rich and poor students widened during COVID

The first NAPLAN results since the pandemic have been released with many Macarthur schools improving on their previous scores.

Julie Sivell, Cawdor Public School’s relieving principal, said she was incredibly proud of her school community.

“The teachers and the students and all the support staff have worked really hard together with our community to show progress well above expectations especially during reading,” she said.

“So we obviously celebrate these results and remain committed to continually improving our outcomes for all students into the future.”

Ms Sivell said the last two years has been a challenging time for all teachers and students as the Covid-19 pandemic forced learning online.

But, she said Cawdor Public School’s teachers and students rose to the challenge to get the job done.

“I am really grateful that the teaching staff continue to deliver those innovative teaching and learning programs for students despite all the disruptions,” Ms Sivell said.

A Daily Telegraph analysis of the data provided by the Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority also identified Islamic school Al-Faisal College in Campbelltown increased by 18 points on average across its Year 7 and Year 9.

The measure compares overall average scores between 2019 and 2021 and does not track student progress between Year 7 and Year 9 nor take into account socio-economic advantage.

It is based on average scaled scores for each school across the domains of reading, writing, grammar, spelling and numeracy.

NAPLAN, which has always been held in the second week of May, will move to mid-March from 2023.

In 2023, NAPLAN will be held from March 15 March to March 27.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said she was pleased that changes were happening in line with the review initiated by NSW in 2019 to make NAPLAN a more effective diagnostic tool.

“These are necessary changes I have been pushing for over the past two years, particularly following the success of the NSW Check-In Assessments, which give teachers results within 48 hours,” Ms Mitchell said.

The NAPLAN will be moved from 2023.

“Currently the timing of NAPLAN means it is not diagnostic, as students sit the tests quite late and results are delivered months later, minimising their value in the classroom.”

“Delivering results earlier in the year means teachers have a better understanding of where their students are at and can develop classroom programs accordingly,” Ms Mitchell said.

“This is a win for teachers, students and their families. It ensures the assessment can be used more effectively and provides greater opportunity to improve learning outcomes.”
