Macarthur Anglican School, in Cobbitty, saw incredible results across its secondary school, with a NAPLAN result average of 622.8, one of the highest results in Sydney.
“It’s about instilling a love of learning,” dean of studies Kylie Elling said.
“We want our students to love learning, to have a lifelong love of learning. It’s not just about drilling them with facts, but seeing how it relates to real life.
“That underpins the academic culture, our students want to do well because they want to learn.”
Ms Elling said Macarthur Anglican School is “one that really values a strong academic culture” and the strong results were “not a one off”.
“But what we also look at is the growth between year three and five, and seven and nine, rather than just results,” she said.
“As educators that’s also what we’re trying to do – we’re trying to help out students reach their potential.”
That academic excellence, Ms Elling said, “doesn’t happen by magic”.
“We’ve worked really hard to build that culture up,” she said.
“And it’s really about the quality teachers we have. That exceptional quality of teacher in front of our students, that is really huge.”
