State Planning Minister Rob Stokes today announced that Wilton New Town would be a priority growth area.
The development’s proponents, including Bradcorp, Governors Hill and Walker Corporation, welcomed the announcement, which reserves the area for future land release and recognises Wilton New Town as a major new community.
Wollondilly Mayor Simon Landow said the announcement and its gazetting was good news that indicated the certainty and importance of the development.
“I’m pretty happy with the result,” he said. “We kind of knew it was coming but it’s good to have that confirmation; it means certainty for the residents and landowners out there.
“To be able to be on council when this was first proposed and to see it come to this stage is really exciting and I’m looking forward to its completion.”
The council’s general manager Luke Johnson said the announcement was good news for current and future communities in the Wollondilly shire.
“This is an outstanding opportunity for Wollondilly to establish a flourishing community for current and future generations,” he said.
“It’s not very often that planning for a brand new town the size of Port Macquarie is announced.”
The master plan for the precinct includes new schools, public transport, road upgrades, green space, retail areas and approximately 16,500 residential dwellings.
Rezoning of land is underway and construction of new dwellings is expected to begin in early 2018.
Bradcorp chief executive Peter Brennan said the announcement was welcome news for people looking forward to the opportunity to live in a brand new town with an abundance of facilities.
“This decision has been a long time coming and is a big step forward towards realising the vision for Wilton Junction in creating a special community where people are proud to live, work and call home,” Mr Brennan said.
“The creation of a new town at Wilton Junction will address issues of affordability and a diversity in housing supply that takes some of the pressure off Sydney and gives people hope for a future where they can live and raise families in an ideal and sustainable environment.
“For the many people who are looking forward to the opportunity to live at Wilton Junction we can say with certainty that it won’t be long now.”
The self contained community is estimated to inject $7 billion into the local economy, provide 12,000 homes and 11,000 jobs.
Spokesman for the proponents, Brian Elton, said the detailed plan for Wilton Junction had been developed over a number of years, with input from the community.
“The Wilton Junction component of the Wilton New Town will deliver around 12,000 new houses and 11,000 jobs close to home, as well as infrastructure to support growth in south west Sydney,” Mr Elton said.
“The community supported our master plan, identifying the importance of infrastructure such as schools and public transport as being key to the success of this new area.
“We will continue to work with the community through the rezoning process.”
