A LAGOON, similar to that of Brisbane’s South Bank, will come to Campbelltown whether a bid for the Commonwealth Games is successful or not.

It is proposed that Campbelltown would host beach volleyball if a Western Sydney bid to host the Commonwealth Games is successful in 2026 or 2030.

Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic said even if the bid failed, the $1.5 million lagoon was on the agenda for Campbelltown Council.

“We’re looking to do something on the Farrow Rd side of Campbelltown between Blaxland and Farrow roads anyway,” he said.

“It would complement a business, health and medical precinct.

“I think we’ll be doing that no matter what happens with the bid, we’ll be doing that within the next four or five years.”

Cr Brticevic said the lagoon would open up the area to more weekend family activities.

“When the businesses aren’t there, there’s something activated in the area on the weekends,” he said.

“It’s somewhere for people to have a reprieve when it’s hot and for some fun and leisure.

“It’s not a dream, it’s reality.”

Cr Brticevic said a 5000-seat conference/entertainment centre also proposed as part of the bid could feature in Leumeah as part of a larger business precinct.

“It could complement Campbelltown Stadium as part of a commercial/ retail and residential precinct there,” he said.

“You would need a higher density residential area around that precinct to feed into it when sports aren’t happening.”
