Macarthur residents honoured for community service

The contributions of some of the Macarthur region’s finest have been recognised on the Australia Day Honours List.

The contributions of some of the Macarthur region’s finest have been recognised on the Australia Day Honours List.

Six Macarthur region residents were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for their contributions to Australian society in a variety of fields.

Camden historian Dr Ian Willis was among those to be recognised for his service to community history.

Dr Willis is the president of the Camden Historical Society and an author of several books chronicling the history of the local area.

Dr Willis said he was honoured by the award.

“It’s a great honour, it’s a recognition from the community of your work,” he said.

Dr Willis said he had a passion for the history of Camden and believed it was important that local history was preserved.

“In all cultures in human history storytelling is a big part in how they project their identity,” he said.

“Camden, both the town and the district, has always had a strong sense of place, which is not always the case with other areas.

“Local history studies aren’t as appreciated as much as they should be in academic circles ... I think the cream of my work has been having local history published in peer-reviewed academic journals.

“I’m proud that I’ve been able to project Camden onto an international platform in the academic area.”
