Yet another Sydney golf course, offering affordable tee-offs to punters, is in the firing line – this time with plans for a massive housing development to wipe out a popular course.

Macarthur Grange Country Club in the outskirts of Sydney at Raby Road in Kearns could be transformed into a multimillion-dollar residential community, with promises of “modest” homes and “grassy paddocks” to replace the scenic golf club.

Campbelltown Council have supported the Gateway Determination of masterplans for as many as 63 homes to replace the course, adjacent to the Campbelltown Scenic Hills, after plans for the site were first touted in 2011.

“The master plan is characterised by its existing rural landscape with retained natural vegetation and scattered buildings that are nestled in the landscape,” planners for the project said.

A new function centre and hotel resort accommodation has also been proposed as part of the future vision for the site, alongside two new parks and a series of conservation areas.

The development would be near the Oran Park estate.

Council planners, in submissions to the NSW Planning Department, said the proposal would provide residential lots ranging from half a hectare to 2.7 hectares, and “a north-south walking and cycle link through the site connecting to existing cycle paths, potential future trails through the Scenic Hills and wider planned Sydney Green Grid projects”.

The council planners argued the proposal would result in a “long-term sustainable” plan for the site.

“The Planning Proposal has been designed to preserve the biodiversity, landscape values and local character of the area,” the planner said. “The proposal will also provide new public access to significant hilltop locations through a north south green corridor that has longer term potential to link the important regional open space locations of the Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan and the Western Sydney Parklands.”

The northern precinct, which is the current site of the golf course, will make up the majority of the development with 46 homes alongside the function centre and resort.

‘The highest point of the southern end of the site is reserved for a new lookout park with public play and BBQ facilities that can take advantage of spectacular panoramic views as far as the Sydney CBD skyline,” a planner for the project said.
